- Bazelon Center: the Bazelon Center has written a guide called "Arrested? What Happens to Your Benefits if You Go to Jail or Prison?" This guide provides information for individuals with disabilities on the status of their benefits when they are in jail, prison, and arrested and how to get their benefits back when released. http://www.bazelon.org/arrested/
- Center for Law and Social Policy along with the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Hudson Institute conducted a study called "Integrating TANF and WIA Into a Single Workforce System: An Analysis of Legal Issues". Click on the title to view in pdf.

- Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma (ADS) of SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services provides free access to health advocates regarding specific methods for addressing discrimination and stigma. The ADS Center is making available the archives of its teleconferences, which feature in-depth technical assistance provided by national experts and grassroots leaders. - University of Illinois/Chicago has a new resource from the Center on Mental Health Services Research & Policy- the first-ever collection of papers devoted exclusively to self-determination and mental health. The papers, written by people with psychiatric disabilities and other experts, summarize current knowledge about self-determination and suggest action steps for the future. Funding/Grant Information:
- (7/15) Centers Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announce a funding opportunity under the Demonstration to Maintain Independence and Employment. One of the four priority areas for possible demonstrations is a project that targets individuals with job-threatening serious mental illnesses. Applications are due July 15, 2004. - (6/8) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the availability of $4.5 million for four grants to treat persons with co-occurring substance-related and mental disorders. The Co-Occurring State Incentive Grants (COSIG) will support, develop and enhance the infrastructure of state treatment service systems to increase capacity to provide accessible, effective, integrated, and evidence-based treatment services to persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, and their families. - (9/10) SAMHSA Offers New Conference Grant Program The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) are accepting applications for SAMHSA Knowledge Dissemination Conference Grants (also referred to as SAMHSA Conference Grants). The purpose of The Conference Grant program is a dissemination of knowledge about practices within the mental health services and substance abuse prevention and treatment fields. In addition these grants promote integration of this knowledge into real-world practice as effectively and efficiently as possible. Eligible applicants are domestic public and private nonprofit entities. - (6/7) CPRP Exam Applications: Applications to sit for the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services (IAPSRS) Fall 2004 administration of the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) examination are now being accepted. The exam is being offered at 15 sites throughout the US and Canada including NYC, Albany, and Buffalo. The application deadline for this exam is June 7, 2004. - HHS Awards $15.7 Million to Help People with Disabilities Return to Work HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced the award of $15.7 million in grants to 28 states and DC to help people with disabilities find and keep work without losing health benefits. HHS has given $57 million in Medicaid Infrastructure grants to 42 states and DC, including New York at $500,000. - Social Security Protection Act (HR 743) was signed into law March 3rd, 2004 by the President. This includes a requirement that Congress study and report on the effectiveness of the Ticket to Work program and extends BPA&O and PABSS through 2009. - (9/15) YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES JOB FAIR AND EXPO- NYC to Host the Largest Job Fair For People with Disabilities September 15, 2004 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New Yorker Hotel 481 8th Avenue (near 34th Street). The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and Hire disAbility invite schools and community-based organizations to attend. The Event will offer a job expo for professional level candidates with disabilities and a career exploration fair for young people.
