Recovery Pilot Project This collaboration between the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Howie T. Harp Peer Advocacy Center, and The Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies’ Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery, will pilot the hiring and training of peer staff to further the delivery of rehabilitation and recovery services at New York City Continuing Day Treatment Programs (CDTPs). Youth Initiative Transition to Independence ( TIP) Trainings: Core Competencies Workshops for Providers Serving SED Youth/Adolescents Core Competencies in Working with SED Youth will be held on September 18th and 19th. Topics include learning how to discover strengths, gaining knowledge of the connection between behavior and outcomes, and learning how to teach skills in community settings. Duke University/Bazelon Ctr : New Resource on Psychiatric Advance Directives The Department of Psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center and the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law have launched the National Resource Center on Psychiatric Advance Directives (NRC-PAD). NRC-PAD offers mental health stakeholders a resource for psychiatric advance directives, and assistance in implementing laws that support patient self-determination and high-quality mental health care. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS): Medicare Payment Hold for ALL Claims During the Last 9 Days of the Federal Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 2006 (9/22/06 – 9/30/06)
This hold is mandated by the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (sec. 5203) and only applies to claims subject to payment such as initial claims, adjusted claims and Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) claims. All claims that would have been paid during this period will be paid on October 2, 2006. No interest will be accrued and no late penalties will be assessed for any delay in a payment due to this mandated payment hold. CMS will consider accelerated payments using normal procedures. CMS also notes that payments will not be staggered and no advance payments will be allowed during this hold. For details, FOLLOW THIS LINK
New York State TANF Funds Released The Pataki Administration has agreed to release $100 million in federal TANF funds that support a wide array of programs and services that serve poor families and youth throughout New York. Kaiser Health Poll Report Survey: Seniors' Early Experiences With Their New Medicare Drug Plans

SAMHSA: Only Half of Treatment Facilities Prepared to Address Co-Occurring Disorders in Adolescents Almost all facilities that treat significant numbers of children and adolescents for substance abuse conduct comprehensive substance abuse assessments. However, only half of these facilities also conduct comprehensive mental health assessments according to a study sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) published in the July, 2006 issue of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.
