- Bailey House, Inc. is offering a series of trainings in the fall from their Human Resources Technical Assistance Program on topics such as staffing an organization, managing diversity in the workplace, and supervision and performance appraisals. - Boston University's Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation's Professional Development Program is offering discounts on registration fees and some books on Internet Courses, Online Seminars, and the Book + Test option for people with psychiatric disabilities and their families. - UMDNJ: The University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey- University Behavioral HealthCare has created the Neuroscience Treatment Team Partner (NTTP) program through the Partners for Excellence in Psychiatry (PEP). The NTTP program is a structured set of psycho-educational modules for illness management & recovery, nutrition, fitness, & a healthy lifestyle that encourages a complete wellness approach and is seen as a best practice for people with SMI and their families. Applications are now being accepted for the three-day training necessary to implement the NTTP program. - American Red Cross has allocated $50 million from the Liberty Disaster Relief Fund to expand treatment for people with 9/11 health needs. Organizations interested in applying for funds should go to: http://www.redcross.org/september11/help
News Briefs:
- Americans with Disabilities Act: The Texas Republican Party has adopted a platform that supports an amendment of the Americans with Disabilities Act to exclude from its definition those persons with infectious diseases, substance addiction, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, homosexual practices and mental stress. This amendment would affect the rights of persons with disabilities in areas such as employment discrimination and securing work related accommodations. - APSE, the Association for Persons in Supported Employment has an update on the Appropriations Committee in the House of Representatives funding bill for the next fiscal year that will continue to fund the SE State Grant program. - Bazelon has an update on the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies approving important mental health funding increases and rejecting certain cuts proposed by the current administration. - Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities invites consumers to Disability Mentoring Day Workshops on August 16th and 23rd at City Hall from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM. Experts from the Department of Social Security will also explain how Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) work incentives can be helpful. - New York State's Minimum Wage: There is discussion among Albany insiders that resistance is pending from Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno on an override of Governor Pataki's veto of a bill to raise the minimum wage. Pressure from downstate Republican senators who are in favor of the wage increases is being countered by business groups who lobbied heavily against the increase.
- Project Greenhope provides mental health and substance abuse services to women with a history of incarceration. They will be hosting their annual job fair on August 19th from 10 AM- 3 PM at Holy Rosemary Church, 444 East 119th Street, NYC. Over 35 employers will be represented. - Ticket to Work: the Ticket to Work and the Work Incentives Advisory Panel have released their annual report which includes findings, conclusions, issues, and recommendations to the President and Congress, Year 4. - Boston University's latest issue of the Recovery & Rehabilitation Newsletter highlights the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Educator's Group composed of faculty who teach psychiatric rehabilitation at the post-secondary level. - Brookings Institution: the publication Encouraging Job Advancement Among Low-Wage Workers: A New Approach, Harry J. Holzer, for Brookings Institution, May 2004 looks at a new dataset from the Census Bureau showing a correlation in recent research between former Welfare recipients' advancement prospects and the characteristics of the employers for whom they work. - USPRA (previously the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services) has developed a Strategic Communications Plan providing more targeted communications to different member sections. A new "CEO Update" for organizational members will launch in late summer and will focus on issues of particular concern to agency CEOs. PSR Connection will continue with new content focusing on practice-related issues and links to vital PSR information.
