Education:
- Boston University announces a new set of Practitioner Tools -- Achieving Valued Roles (AVR). The AVR (skills version) helps individuals assess and develop skills they need and want for functioning in their chosen environments with sample questions and worksheets. - USPRA will be launching their first audio conference on November 17th from 3-4:30 PM on the Principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. This will be a live, interactive audio conference focusing on the 15 principles of psychiatric rehabilitation. Patricia N. Nemec, Director of Graduate Education, BU will be the presenter. Funding and Grant Opportunities:
- (12/13) NYC Administration for Children's Services has issued an RFP: Intensive Preventive Services and Aftercare Service for Adolescents. http://www.nyc.gov/html/selltonyc/pdf/acs_initiatives_fy05.pdf Services will address the needs of parents who require support and youth's permanency and development needs (including employment, education, and mental health). The RFP is now available for pickup at ACS, 150 William St, 9th floor reception area. For more information 212-341-3511. The due date is December 13, 2004, 2:00 pm.
News Briefs/Events:
- Hamilton-Madison House along with NAMI-NYC Metro will be hosting "Treatment Means Success in Life" on November 18th from 5:30PM-7:30PM at 78-14 Roosevelt Avenue, Suite 203 in Jackson Heights, Queens. This event will present information on Eastern and Western medication and mental health and how these treatments can have successful results. Call 718-779-9500 for more information.
- Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act was passed by both the House and the Senate. This bill would authorize $50 million in federal grant dollars to support pre and post booking interventions. S. 1194 will now be sent for anticipated signature by President Bush. - NYAPRS is providing a newly revised PROS presentation for peer audiences at various locations. The NYC area presentations will be: Nov. 16th, at Transitional Services for New York at 147-32 Jamaica Avenue, 2nd floor, Jamaica, Queens from 4-6:00 pm; Nov. 17th, the Long Island Regional Forum/PROS for Peers at South Oaks Hospital, 400 Sunrise Highway, Amityville, NY from 10:00am-1:00pm. - NYC DOHMH, Office of Consumer Affairs has an Open House on November 17th from 4-7 PM. At the Open House information for consumers will be available and opportunities for networking. Call 212-219-5393 for more information.
- CCRR is presenting "Ways to Work and Recovery" on December 8th. This session will offer the results and lessons learned from 2 CCRR projects focusing on the integration of clinical and employment services for individuals with mental illness. - Supportive Housing Network of NY's Tenant Employment Forum will be offering "Deepening Employer Relationships" on Thursday November 18, 2:30- 5:00pm. In addition, the Brooklyn Forum of the Supportive Housing Network will be offering "Workplace Safety & Crisis Prevention" on Friday, November 19, 1:00-4:00pm. - CDC has posted a survey in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report called "REACH 2010 Surveillance for Health Status in Minority Communities, U.S. 2001-2002". This survey monitors the health status of Blacks, Hispanics, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and American Indians and their approach to community health. - GAO (US Government Accountability Office) has released a study called "TANF and SSI Opportunities Exist to Help People with Impairments Become More Self- Sufficient". This study looks at TANF recipients with impairments, the referral process to SSI, and the associated implications for recipients, TANF offices and SSA. - Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. has put together a report "Enrollment Patterns and Medical Expenditures for Medicaid Buy-In Participants in Five States" at the request of Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). This 2004 report looks at enrollment variations and Medicaid and Medicare expenditures for Buy-In participants. - CCRR has posted "Lessons Learned for the Ways to Work Demonstration Project" on its web site. This report looks at the early, middle, and later aspects of the project including integration, cultural shifts, and employment activities. - Public Health Institute published "Child Care Essential Ingredient for Sustained Full-Time Work for Welfare Recipients".
