Housing Retention Counselor

As a member of our new New York State multi-year STEHP grant-funded Housing Crisis Response Team, the Housing Retention Counselor will work in conjunction with our Outreach Team in Westchester County to rapidly rehouse homeless individuals and prevent homelessness among people who are substance users including those with co-occurring mental illness. Responsibilities will include helping these individuals locate available permanent housing, secure housing subsidies, secure other entitlements, and access community resources for treatment and relapse prevention services. For individuals at risk of eviction, the Housing Retention Counselor will provide short-term goal-directed counseling to reduce or mitigate problem behaviors and conflicts with co-residents or landlords, and teach other life skills needed for housing retention. The Critical Time Intervention model, motivational interviewing, wellness self-management, and other evidence-based practices will be used. The Housing Retention Counselor will collaborate and coordinate planning and ongoing services with treatment providers, and when appropriate, with Westchester County DSS and DCMH, and participate in Continuum of Care networks.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree plus a minimum of 5 years strongly related experience, reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license; excellent computer, writing and oral communication skills essential, bilingual English-Spanish and familiarity with Westchester County preferred.
