Assessment/Screening Tools for IDDT

Presenter: Forrest Foster, Research Associated, Dartmouth Evidence-Based Practices Center/Dartmouth Medical School

This session provided an excellent overview of the five steps in the IDDT Assessment Process and how to use the instruments/tools/strategies that comprise each of these steps. The session included an opportunity for participants to use some of the assessment and screening tools on each other.

Motivational Interviewing

Presenter: Laura Travaglini, MA, Substance Abuse Coordinator, Columbia Psychiatric Associates Day Treatment Program

This session focused on the use of the therapy method known as Motivational Interviewing (MI). This method is considered by many to be the most effective at eliciting responses from consumers that in turn allow clinicians to develop an effective treatment plan. The session included film clips of MI being used to treat individuals with addictive disorders.

Strategies for System & Agency-Wide Implementation of IDDT

Presenter: Dr. Ken Minkoff, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School

This session concentrated on the overall system framework for designing appropriately matched integrated service implementation within an agency or program, and the subsequent process for implementation of these services with in the agency infrastructure. Dr. Minkoff is recognized as an expert in developing effective treatment programs for working with dually-diagnosed consumers.

Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling

Presenter: Dr. Douglass Noordsy, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School

This session offered training in specific techniques of individual, cognitive-behavioral substance abuse counseling for consumers with dual disorders organized by stage of treatment, including motivational interviewing, managing craving and relapse prevention. The session also provided an overview of CBT for psychosis, including coping and cognitive restructuring techniques.

Understanding and Treating Youth with Co-Occurring Disorders

Presenter: Dr. Win Turner, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School

This session provided the latest background and research information regarding evidence-based assessment and treatment for youth with co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. The session focused on techniques that have been proven to be effective in working with adolescents with unique needs and concerns. Dr. Turner asked participants to use an OARS (Open Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflective Listening and Summary) tool to better understand how to achieve success in working with a younger population.

Co-Occurring Substance Use & Psychiatric Disorders in Addiction Treatment Programs

This session provided practical tools to enhance the capacity to screen, assess and treat persons with co-occurring disorders in addiction settings. Dr. McGovern offered pragmatic information for clinicians, program directors and system administrators who work with dually diagnosed individuals in addiction treatment programs.

Overview of Dual Diagnosis: Principles of Integrated Treatment & Treatment Planning

Presenter: Dr. Kim Mueser, Clinical Psychologist and Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Community & Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School

This session provided a general overview of the IDDT philosophy. Dr. Mueser taught providers how to be able to describe different theories regarding the high prevalence of substance abuse disorders in persons with mental illness and their treatment implications. Dr. Mueser also described the core characteristics of IDDT, and how to conduct a functional assessment that leads directly into treatment planning.

Family Treatment

Presenter: Melinda Fox, Research Associate, New Hampshire-Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center
Taped: June 2006

This session taught providers to be able to describe different reasons for working with families of persons with substance abuse disorders and severe mental illness, and to describe two models for conducting such family work with individual families and groups of families. Ms. Fox used training videos to highlight the different techniques used in family treatment.
