Supervision and Supervising in Motivational Interviewing

Friday, May 8, 2015 and Friday, May 15, 2015 | 9am - 1pm
2 Sessions -- Attendees are required to attend both sessions.

The goal of this series is to equip supervisors from both mental health and substance abuse centers to be able to supervise staff in the evidenced based practice of Motivational Interviewing.

Prerequisite:
Only those who have attended the Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Series or the Advance MI workshop are eligible for this workshop.

Roleplaying will be heavily utilized in this series.

Session I: Spirit and Empathy - Global Ratings, OARS Skills and Complex Reflections

This session will introduce the concept of global ratings: set up low score and high score therapist profiles with patient role, outline roleplaying with debriefing as a supervision skill. A review of OARS skills will be presented as a measure of proficiency and competency followed by group roleplaying. A brief presentation of the function and form of complex reflections will proceed several group activities of case history reviews and roleplaying.

Session II: Rolling with Resistance, Recognizing/Reinforcing/Eliciting Change Talk and Unfolding the MI Session.

Rolling strategies to resistance will be discussed followed by roleplaying activities. Strategies for facilitating statements of desire, ability, reason, need and commitment will be discussed followed video segments and roleplaying . Participants will conduct a "session" in giving feedback to therapist using MI modeling as basis for feedback. A session map will be introduced to the group followed by roleplaying "next steps" in the session.

Presenter:
Laura Travaglini, MA, is Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Programs at Columbia University Eastside and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of dually-diagnosed patients through evidence-based interventions. She holds a certificate as a Motivational Interviewing Network Trainer (MINT) from the renowned Dr. William Miller and his team at the University of New Mexico.
