Today, the driving philosophy in behavioral health services - and in the Medicaid reforms underway - is recovery. Outpatient mental health treatment programs are integral providers in this model. This free one day course will teach about recovery-oriented practice in mental health care, and how to integrate this approach into clinical work.

The morning session with focus primarily on developing an understanding of recovery practice, skills and principles, through both discussion and exercises. The afternoon session will be devoted to operationalizing these skills and principles both at the organizational and clinical level.

Specifically, participants will learn about:

  • How recovery practice differs from traditional treatment, and how the two approaches can be used in tandem to meet individuals' needs.
  • Recovery culture at the organizational level
  • Clinical practice that supports recovery
  • Recovery-driven program models, such as PROS, clubhouses and psychosocial clubs, ACT, and rehab programs.
  • At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
  • Define recovery as it relates to mental health.
  • Identify recovery driven program models and resources.
  • Describe at least two clinical practices that will support recovery.

  • Information regarding Social Work Continuing Education: This course has been approved for 6 social work CEU hours. In order to receive the CE hours participants must: attend both sessions; arrive on time; stay for the full session; submit a post-test; and document their attendance via the Social Work CE sign in and sign-out roster. No credit will be provided for partial attendance

    Name and qualifications of facilitator(s): Bradley Jacobs, LMSW, is the Director of the Center for R&R; at the Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies in NYC.

    Prior to joining R&R; In January of 2016, Bradley was the co-Director of Adult Behavioral Health programs at CASES, an agency providing alternative sentencing options for people with behavioral health issues who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Over the past 16 years Bradley’s work has focused on delivering services to people with serious mental illness and promoting practices that support participant choice and enhance recovery.

    He obtained his MSW from the NYU School of Social Work in 2001 and has worked in various social service and nonprofit settings including: homeless services and street outreach, housing first approaches to supportive housing, Assertive Community Treatment, Alternatives to Incarceration, psychiatric research, and research for the visually impaired. Bradley is a certified instructor in the SAMHSA GAINS Center’s

    Amanda Saake, LMSW, CPRP, is a Senior Program Associate for the Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery at the Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies, where she provides training, consultation, and technical assistance to community behavioral health providers in New York City. Ms. Saake is a graduate of Marywood University and Columbia University School of Social Work. Amanda has worked in a broad range of settings including supportive housing, ACT, harm reduction, and psychiatric rehabilitation as both a clinician and supervisor. Ms. Saake's commitment to recovery-oriented interventions is also personal and predates her professional development, stemming from her first encounter with mental health services at the age of 17. Ms. Saake is a Licensed Master Social Worker (#073779) and a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP).
