Prevalence estimates of trauma among people with co-occurring substance use disorders and serious mental illness are so high that providers need to have a “universal assumption” of trauma in their approach to participants within their programs.

The reverberating effects of trauma experiences can challenge a person’s capacity for recovery and pose significant barriers to accessing services, often resulting in an increased risk of hospitalization or arrest.

This course will look at understanding and defining trauma; the impact of trauma on health, mental health, substance use, relationships and behavior; review and teach skills for practitioners to develop trauma-informed responses; address ways to create trauma-informed programs, organizations and systems of care; and finally, address the impact of secondary traumatic stress on caregivers and teach effective techniques to counter burnout, turnover and secondary traumatic stress.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will demonstrate an understanding of how trauma may affect someone’s behavior.

  • Participants will explain why it is important to learn more about trauma and identify key prevalence statistics.

  • Participants will identify and practice skills to respond to clients in a trauma-informed way.

  • Participants will identify trauma-informed policies and procedures that his / her organization can implement.

  • Participants will learn and practice at least two self-care strategies.

     This course has been approved for 9 Social work CE hours.
    This course has been approved for 9 CASAC continuing education contact hours.

    In order to receive the CE hours participants must: arrive on time; stay for all sessions; complete an evaluation, submit a pre and post-test; and document their attendance via the CE sign in and sign-out roster. No credit will be provided for partial attendance.

    Bradley Jacobs, LCSW, is the Director of the Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery at the Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies in NYC.

    Trainer Bio: Bradley Jacobs, LCSW is the Director of the Center for Rehabilitation & Recovery, at The Coalition for Behavioral Health, where he provides overall guidance and administration to a team delivering training and technical assistance focused on promoting person-centered and recovery-oriented services to behavioral health agencies in New York City.

    Prior to joining The Coalition, Bradley was the co-Director of Adult Behavioral Health programs at CASES, an agency providing alternative sentencing options for people with behavioral health issues who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Over the past 18 years Bradley’s work has focused on delivering services to people with serious mental illness and promoting practices that support participant choice and enhance recovery, health and wellbeing.

    Bradley obtained his MSW from the NYU School of Social Work in 2001 and has worked in various social service and nonprofit settings including: homeless services and street outreach, housing first approaches to supportive housing, Assertive Community Treatment, Alternatives to Incarceration, psychiatric research, and research for the visually impaired.

    Fee: While this workshop is free of charge, there is a $50 cancellation fee if registrants do not cancel more than 24 hours in advance.
