Introduction to Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Skills Training in Groups

This training is for mental health practitioners who facilitate groups as part of their core job responsibilities and for their direct supervisors. Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) providers are highly encouraged to register.

Many of us learn by doing. Groups offer the opportunity for participants to learn and practice new skills that support recovery. This training seeks to increase focus on skills training in group work.

Using psychiatric rehabilitation as a foundation, this two-day training will focus on:

  • Introduction to psychiatric rehabilitation
  • Common skill challenges experienced by people with serious mental illness
  • Overview of skills training and its role in recovery
  • Evidence-based techniques to teach coping, social, and other living skills
  • Making skills training engaging and enjoyable

At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define psychiatric rehabilitation
  • Explain core psychiatric rehabilitation principles
  • Identify common challenges with skills development for people with serious mental illness
  • Describe the skills training approach in psychiatric rehabilitation
  • Demonstrate ways to train people in the areas of relaxation/stress reduction, social skills, and living skills
  • Describe how they can implement these skills in programs
  • Identify tools for self-assessment and supervisory review

  • * Information regarding Social Work Continuing Education: This course has been approved for 12 social work CE hours. In order to receive the CE hours participants must: attend both sessions; arrive on time; stay for the full session; submit a post-test; and document their attendance via the Social Work CE sign in and sign-out roster.
