The Coalition Launches Business Transformation Initiative Through an exciting new business transformation initiative funded by The New York Community Trust, The Coalition hosted our kick off forum on May 31, 2017. This project will help support our members to adapt their business operations to a value based environment. The event’s plenary session was led by Don McDaniel, CEO of Continuum Health, who emphasized that behavioral health providers have opportunities but must embrace change. He was followed by a lightning round panel discussion, including the project’s participating consultants.

Life & The Art of Wellness: 11th Annual Conference for NYC Working Peer Specialists Set for 7/13 The July 13, 2017 Conference for Working Peer Specialists will focus on the frequently unspoken subject of suicide. As the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. it presents an even higher risk for our community. The conference will offer an opportunity to learn and share promising, evidence-based best practices, network, and job hunt, and will also provide the latest information on mental health peer support in NYC. A Resource Room will include the Academy of Peer Services, the NYS Peer Specialist Certification Board and the ThriveNYC Peer Specialist training initiative ThriveAtWork. Also offered this year is “SafeTALK, Suicide Alertness for Everyone”, a special certificate training facilitated by Dr. Silvia Giliotti, the NYS OMH Suicide Prevention Coordinator for New York City and Long Island. Even a comfort room and free massages are provided. We hope to see many of our Peer Specialist colleagues there! First Lady Chirlane McCray Hosts a Community Conversation with Staten Island Mental Health Society On May 31, 2017, The Coalition’s member Staten Island Mental Health Society, along with other Staten Island mental health organizations, hosted a community conversation with New York City’s First Lady Chirlane McCray. The First Lady, who has left an indelible mark with her and Mayor de Blasio’s signature mental health initiatives, Thrive NYC and Healing NYC, opened up to the community with her personal story and spoke about the importance of alleviating the stigma attached to mental illness. Later, she fielded questions from the community and was well supported by the many agency officials who joined her for the event. The event was co-sponsored by local officials Borough President James Oddo, District Attorney Michael McMahon, and Council Member Debi Rose. |

On May 11, 2017, Mayor de Blasio announced that the City will open two diversion centers operated by Samaritan Daytop Village and Project Renewal. Each will receive $44 million and $46 million respectively over 10 years to provide people living with mental illness an additional option instead of becoming hospitalized or incarcerated. Dr. Peter Provet, President & CEO of Odyssey House wrote an op-ed that was featured in The New York Times on May 21, 2017, cocerning a recent report titled “If This Were an Overdose, Would You Help?”. The report focused on installing lockboxes containing the opioid overdose antidote naloxone throughout Cambridge, MA. Dr. Provet expressed his belief that public administration of the antidote could become a turning point for the opioid epidemic. This movement will help to save numerous lives, reduce stigma, and educate local communities about addiction. On May 23, 2017, Kelsey Louise, CEO of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) announced that the agency will be opening a mental health clinic to help provide treatment and counseling to clients who have behavioral health disorders and HIV/AIDS. The clinic will be available to adult New Yorkers of all sexual orientations, gender identities, income levels and HIV statuses. With the new clinic, the agency plans to offer holistic services and tackle the societal barriers that appear with mental health and HIV/AIDS. On May 19, 2017, Yvette Brissett-Andre, Executive Director/CEO of Unique People Services, was recognized for her eight years of dedication for assisting individuals living with developmental disabilities and HIV/AIDS. Ms. Brissett-Andre will be awarded the Bronx Chamber of Commerce’s Best of the Bronx award for her contribution to the community. She mentioned that one of her main priorities in life is to build strong relationships with the people she helps and she is currently working on opening the agency’s first 94-unit affordable housing complex. Recently, The Fortune Society was acknowledged in the NY Community Trust newsletter for supporting and contributing to the success of Leviticus Mitchell. After years of being incarcerated, Mr. Mitchell became a member of an alternative-to-incarceration program run by the Fortune Society, which motivated him to finish school. Today, Mr. Mitchell works part time at The Fortunate Society in the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy, where he is currently helping to organize a conference on criminal and social justice issues and teaches adolescents the necessary skills for jobs. It is truly inspiring to see how the Fortune Society assisted with the transformation and development of this ambitious advocate. Recently, Concern for Independent Living gained $52.9 million to fund the development of supportive housing for people living with disabilities. The program will house previously homeless disabled adults and low-income families at a 96-unit apartment complex in Hempstead, Long Island. Collectively the agency secured $25.9 million from the state Homes and Community Renewal agency, $9.2 million from the state Office of Mental Health, $5.9 million from the state Housing Finance Agency, and $5.2 million from the state Homeless and Housing assistance corp. Additionally, the agency received support from Bank of America and First Home Loan Bank of New York with this project. Coalition President & CEO, Christy Parque led a panel titled “Chill Out: Meditation for All” at the 17th Annual Supportive Housing Network Conference on June 1, 2017. The panel focused on expressing the importance of meditation and showing the collaboration between a nonprofit supportive housing organization and a nonprofit mediation education organization. This year’s conference focused on how the community will implement Mayor de Blasio’s and Governor Cuomo’s plan to build 35,000 units of supportive housing over the next fifteen years. Homeless Services United held its 2017 gala on June 6th to honor healthcare professionals who contributed to the homeless services community. Among the list of honorees was Commissioner Loree Sutton from the New York City Department of Veterans Services, Bobby Watts, CEO of the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council, and David Walsh, Senior Vice President of JP Morgan Chase Community Development Banking. The Coalition would like to congratulate all of the honorees as well as Homeless Services United for hosting such a successful event. |
