Skills-Focused Group Facilitation & Using Curriculum for Groups


Skills development is a critical component of psychiatric rehabilitation process. To assist with the process, facilitators will need to know how to effectively teach skills to individuals in a group setting. This 1-day workshop will equip providers with the skills necessary facilitate a skills focused group (learning to break skills into teachable steps, learn concept of tell-show-do, etc.). This training will also offer providers the tools necessary to create skill focused curriculum.

Specifically, participants will learn about:

  • Assisting individuals identify skills that are relevant to their goal achievement

  • Teaching skills development in either group or individual session

  • Components of skill focused curriculum development
  • After completing the training, participants will be able to:
  • Identify how individuals can overcome barriers to goal obtainment by strengthening skills

  • Describe the step-based approach to facilitating a skills training session

  • Execute process for breaking skills into steps

  • Create effective skills training curriculum
  • Name and qualification of facilitators:
    Marlo Pasion, LCSW, is a Senior Training and Implementation Specialist at the Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery. She collaborates with New York City behavioral health providers on enhancing access and quality of person-centered and recovery-oriented services through her provision of trainings and technical assistance. Her diverse direct practice experience includes human services within the domains of youth residential and youth outreach, families with children diagnosed under the autism spectrum, older adults, adult behavioral health, and survivors of domestic violence. Prior to joining The Coalition for Behavioral Health, Marlo served as program director at The Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC)’s Harlem Bay Network Personalized Recovery-Oriented Services (PROS) program, where she oversaw and assisted with curriculum development and group facilitation.

    Clinton Green, LMSW , is a Training and Implementation Specialist at The Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery. He collaborates with New York City behavioral health providers on enhancing access and quality of person-centered and recovery-oriented services through her provision of trainings and technical assistance. Prior to this position, Clinton has worked Over ten (10+) years with individuals with mental health challenges in recovery-oriented programs including over three (3+) plus years in a supervisory role. In these roles, he assisted with the development and writing of skill building curriculum as well as facilitated skills development groups.

    *Information for Continuing Education: This course is approved for 6 LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, CASAC/CPP/CPS CE hours. Please have your Social Work License Number on hand. To receive the CE hours participants must: attend the full session; arrive on time; stay for the full session; submit a post-test; and document their attendance via the Social Work CE sign in and sign-out roster. No credit will be provided for partial attendance, no exceptions please.
