The Coalition is deeply concerned about the end of the exemption that allows licensed mental health practitioners, including Mental Health Counselors and Marriage & Family Therapists, to diagnose and practice according to their training. We are now less than two months from the end of the exemption, and there is no clear guidance on how to implement this change.

The behavioral health field already faces a significant workforce crisis, with 40% turnover annually and 20% vacancy. As we work to address the mental health issues of the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot lose any members of our workforce. These licensed professionals are critical to the care of thousands of New Yorkers.
