Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Each session will run from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon. Registration begins at 8:30 AM. All sessions will be held at the Coalition's offices located in lower Manhattan at 90 Broad St, 8th Fl. For directions click on the "Contact Us" link to the left.

Sessions

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Series of 5 Sessions


Sessions will be led by Dr. Petros Levounis the Director of The Addiction Institute of New York (formerly Smithers) and Chief of Addiction Psychiatry at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

Registration conditions: You may not register for this series if you attended the same series last year. We may also limit registrations to two persons per organization, depending on demand.

Participants must register and commit to attending all five sessions. CASAC, CPP and CPS credits will be awarded based on participation in all five sessions.


Session 1 - October 16, 2009 9am-Noon BASIC PRINCIPLES
This first session will introduce the core concepts of Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT) based on the role of cognition in controlling human emotion and behavior. We will review both the theoretical constructs and the practical applications of this powerful treatment modality.

Session 2 - October 23, 2009 9am-Noon FORMAT OF SESSIONS and FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
In the first part of the day, we will work with the 10/10/10 rule of the 30 minute therapy session. Then we will study Functional Analysis by exploring thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and positive and negative consequences associated with substance use.

Session 3 - October 27, 2009 9am-Noon SKILLS TRAINING I: CRAVINGS AND THOUGHTS
Using practical exercises and role-play, we will work on coping with cravings and changing automatic thoughts that drive behavior. Specific techniques include distraction, challenging the thoughts, and thinking through the high. We will also address some special considerations of using CBT to treat insomnia.

Session 4 - November 6, 2009 9am-Noon SKILLS TRAINING II: SPECIAL TOPICS
This session is dedicated to working with specific high-risk circumstances and will address: (1) refusal skills and assertiveness, (2) identification of seemingly irrelevant decisions, (3) emergency coping skills, and (4) basic problem-solving techniques.

Session 5 - November 13, 2009 9am-Noon CBT and PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY
The final session of the course will be dedicated to a presentation of the psychopharmacology of addiction. We will discuss both currently used medications, including varenicline and buprenorphine, as well as medications under investigation, including stimulants and the cocaine vaccine.


All sessions will take place from 9am - 12 Noon in the Coalition's Conference Room located at 90 Broad St. 8th Fl.
