Introduction to Dialetical Behavioral Therapy

December 1, 2009 | 9am - Noon

Through the teaching of skills and the managment of motivation, the patient is helped to make essential, often life and death, behavioral and emotional changes, in the context of a respectful and validating relationship. Dozens of controlled and quasi-experimental research studies support the use of this treatment with BPD patients, and patients from other diagnostic groups (eating disorders, substance abuse, elderly depressed, veterans with trauma) have been studied as well.

The workshop will include:

An introduction to the theoretical underpinnings of DBT including Behaviorism, Zen and Dialectics
A description of the biosocial theory for understanding Borderline Personality Disorder
A description of the framework of DBT including the modes and functions of the treatment
An introduction to the basics of the individual therapy modality, including the Change, Validation and Dialectical Strategies
An introduction to the four modules of skills training: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Emotion Regulation

This workshop will be presented by Christine Foertsch, PhD who was intensively trained in DBT in 1993 and, since 1994, has been conducting workshops throughout the US and abroad for Behavioral Tech, LLC.
