Sessions

Anti-Racist/Oppressive Practice with Vulnerable Populations

**NOTICE! If this session is SOLD OUT to registration, please email [email protected] and request to be put on the wait list. Thank you.

Research indicates that much of the curriculum intended to prepare social workers, psychologist, and varied behavioral health professionals is devoid of attention, or consideration to the impact of social determinants of behavior — such as racism, poverty, systematic oppression on the assessment and subsequent treatment of the people they intend to serve; thus this training aims to bridge that gap by allowing participants to foster a more holistic approach to their practice.

After completing the training, participants will be able to:

  • co-create a safe space that allows for reflection and critical thought on the subject matter in relation to their work

  • define and analyze race, racism and varied facets of systemic oppression

  • critically examine the ways race/racism plays out in society, their lives, and their work

  • to utilize and further develop an anti-racist tool box to promote a more holistic approach to their work
  • Name and qualification of facilitators:
Dr. Kirk Anthony James is a Clinical Professor at NYU Silver school of social work with a focus on systems of oppression and the intersection of trauma inclusive of healing modalities.

Julie Smyth is a licensed social worker who has written and published on issues pertaining to racism, systematic oppression, mass incarceration and Human Rights.

Roosevelt Arrington is a Columbia University Justice Scholar, community activist and co-founder of EVOLVE — a movement dedicated to utilizing education and love as the praxis for human and societal transformation.
